I’ve had the great fortune to provide creative direction in a variety of situations over the years, from designing magazines to directing video shoots to developing a full digital business for an established agency.

What I’ve learned sounds like a no-brainer, but some people never get it: Leadership is more than just ordering people around.

 

Managing anything — a team, a project, an account, a business — requires good listening skills. Really listening to your team, and your clients, and your peers, and your vendors, and your own leaders. Don’t multitask. Put your phone down. Now, take all of that input and run it through your own creative vision to rapidly build a plan that is actionable, explainable, and achievable.

Empathy + Vision

I try to understand the drivers and motivators for my teammates, evaluate their strengths and weaknesses, and include their own personal growth demands in my planning.

 

By communicating information effectively, responding quickly to their needs, protecting them during vulnerable times, and building trust and camaraderie, I’ve been able to recruit and retain a loyal cadre of talented creatives who still enjoy working with me.
